Why not use the oldest Hebrew manuscripts instead?Īt first, our reasons were simply practical: It was made to benefit Jews who lived outside of Israel and no longer used Hebrew as their everyday language, but had adopted Greek – which was the international language at the time. Experts have found fragments of Greek Septuagint manuscripts dating as far back as the 2nd century BCE. The Septuagint is a Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures, which was translated (according to ancient historians) between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE. To do this, we used the Septuagint text (also known as the LXX). However, once that project was completed, we decided to continue on and complete the Old Testament too. When we started the 2001 Translation, we only wanted to create a more accurate and easier-to-read New Testament.
